What does it mean to have a fully integrated inverter in your off grid caravan?

Outech OffGrid install off grid 12 volt caravan power system with 240 volt capability.

One of our customers, who owns a Kakoda Caravan, came to us at Outech OffGrid Power Solutions for a 12 volt lithium power system upgrade with 240 volt capability to provide power to their 240 volt electrical appliances, such as microwave, air conditioner and coffee machine while free camping off the grid.

Prior to upgrading their caravan power system, they were running 2 x AGM Batteries, a 1500W Kings inverter, plus solar panels, solar regulator and other electrical components all of various brands.

The AGM batteries did not holding charge and both caravan batteries were swollen.  The inverter was not compatible with AGM batteries, plus it had been house in the under-seat cabinet with an extension lead running out and across the floor of the caravan then up onto the bench to run 240 volts appliances such as the toaster, coffee machine and kettle.  With children coming in and out of the caravan this was not a safe situation.

Example of inverter installed in a caravan that has not been hard wired and requires running hazardous extension leads across the caravan.

An inverter that is integrate fully in a caravan result in 240 volt appliances working off grid when plugged into any of the caravan power points, such as in the kitchen, café lounge or bedside.  Whereas, when an inverter is stalled by person who is not a licensed electrician they cannot legally hard wire it, and so you have to run extension leads across the caravan to use 240 volt appliances.

This is dangerous and we highly recommend against this practice!

How inverters are installed depends on the installer’s qualifications and licence, and in this example the inverter was not installed by a licensed electrician, meaning no power to the 240 volt power points and sockets when camping off grid.

Check out this video where Dan shows you a caravan inverter that was not installed correctly.
