As Geoff and Nat, proud owners of a New Age Caravan, embrace their retirement, they are eager to embark on new adventures. To support their exciting lifestyle changes, they recognised the need for an upgraded power setup in their caravan.
Geoff and Nat raised concerns about the heat while caravanning, and were looking for a power system with enough power to run two air conditioners whiles camping off grid.
After completing the Outech OffGrid Power Upgrade Consulation Process, the primary motivations and objectives for undertaking this comprehensive caravan power system overhaul were centered around enabling the owners, a couple nearing retirement, to travel extensively and support significant energy demands within their New Age Big Red caravan.
Here are the key motivations and objectives:
• Extended Air Conditioner Operation: A primary driver for the upgrade was the desire to run the air conditioner for extended periods of time. This was particularly crucial because they had not only the original Gree roof-mounted air conditioner in the living space but had also installed a second cassette-style Truma air conditioner underneath the bed in the bedroom, as the original unit didn't effectively cool the sleeping area. The new system needed to manage the "quite extensive" energy consumption from these two units.
• Enabling Extensive Travel: As the owners were approaching retirement, they wanted their van to be set up for extensive travel, allowing them to utilise it for their future journeys.
• Addressing Fridge Performance Issues: The original fridge struggled to maintain adequate coldness in hot climates, with both the fridge and freezer not staying cold enough. A key objective was to make the fridge work more efficiently.
• Enhanced Energy Independence and Management:
◦ The overhaul aimed to provide the ability to run both air conditioners from the inverter.
◦ Ability to replenish the energy consumed by the air conditioners while simultaneously using energy.
◦ A significant objective was to provide much better control over their loads and much better information from their monitoring package.
◦ This included maximising solar input with 1,600 W of solar on the roof and the option to add another 600 W of portable solar, totaling up to 2200 watts.
Outech OffGrid performed an extensive electrical upgrade on Geoff and Nat’s New Age Big Red Caravans as the prepared for retirement plans to travel extensively around Australia. This significant overhaul included installing 1600W of caravan solar panels, a 620Ah RV lithium battery, and a 3000W inverter to support two air conditioners—one original and one newly added under the bed for improved cooling in the bedroom. The original BM Pro system was completely removed and replaced with Simarine for comprehensive power management and a wireless switching package for lights and pumps. Additionally, thermostatically controlled fridge ventilation and an internal fridge fan were installed to improve cooling efficiency in hot climates, plus bug lights for comfort around the campsite.
